What kind of a system do you have? It seems to me that you don't have drivers installed for your sound card.
Find out what sound card your system have, find and install appropriate drivers. After this your sound card should show up. If this doesn't work, it might be that your sound card is disabled in BIOS in which case you have to go and enable and then install drivers.
