Out of curiousity - when you updated your A Records for the site to point to the IP, how long did you 'wait' before giving up on it and making other changes? As mentioned, DNS changes can take up to 48 hours to propagate worldwide, so if your bindings were correct, my thought is that perhaps your DNS changes had not yet fully propagated, and as such, the domain's URL wasn't reaching your IP Address.

If you do a quick internet search for 'DNS Propagation Check', you can run some utilities to get approximate propagation status worldwide. I have tried many different DNS record changes. I can view the website if I type the IP address in a browser but not if I type the domain name instead. I have changed this now and I am using the domain registrar's name servers and pointing the A records to my static IP.

So fingers crossed, but I'm not holding my breath. Sadly I have a bit of experience of port forwarding as my son made me do it for game servers sigh. In desperation I also modified the hosts file, but that was a stupid idea as that would only work locally. Firewall seems to be happy enough with access via the IP address so I assume it would like the domain name too if only it would work! That's a very good point because the first couple of times I waited until the next day as my domain registrar states it can take 2 hours to propagate.

As such I thought that leaving it overnight would be fine. Thereafter however I got so frustrated with it that I probably left it a bit less each time. I'll try to keep my sticky fingers away from it for a bit and see what happens.

It's a bit like watching paint dry though. Ah well I'll try giving it more time. That's a very kind offer thank you, I'll certainly take you up on it if it's still driving me mad over the next couple of days.

Most domain providers offer free dns service. You can configure domain to your computer internet IP. Thanks for that. Yeah that's what my domain provider said to do eventually after many emails back and forth. However they have been very helpful so I can't complain and I probably just didn't explain it well the first few times.

I added another hugely long message earlier which took ages to appear and then was partly garbled so I have removed it. I think it is because I had IP information in it. It all seems to be working now but a lot can change in a short space of time I've discovered so I'm keeping an eye on it.
