Designed independently of the console version, the PC version of Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2 builds on the success of the first game by adding loads more customization, plenty of new and deadly toys, improved tactical control and even more multiplayer options. What to Expect: Massive Entertainment has been making terrific games for years. Their first title Ground Control helped usher 3D into RTS gaming while their second helped solidify their ideas about tactical gameplay instead of base building and resource management.
World in Conflict is, in many ways, the culmination of their time as a developer. They've taken a lot of the lessons they learned from the Ground Control series and made a fantastically fast paced tactical strategy game set in an alternate history where the Cold War turned hot. Utilizing a Battlefieldesque territory capture system, the game rewards smart play with tactical points that can be used for explosively fun special attacks ranging from air to air strikes to nuclear missiles. Multiplayer is definitely fun and we're hoping when we get a chance to play single player, we'll see the same.
This is absolutely a game worth watching. Strategy Expansion Packs. What to Expect: Civilization IV is already one of our favorite games of the last few years so when you add in the largest and most comprehensive expansion in the series' history, things are bound to get even better. In addition to the usual suspects found in an expansion -- new units, new civs, new scenarios, and such -- Beyond the Sword also includes loads of cool new gameplay features that add interesting strategies to the core game.
The new Apostolic Palace adds spice to the religious game, while an enlarged Espionage system gives a little extra punch to diplomacy. Corporations make resources and economic protection even more important than ever. Add in new colonial rules, random events, options for accelerated starts and you've got an expansion that has more new features than most full games.
Go ahead and clear your calendar for August. What to Expect: For sheer tactical joy, few games even come close to level of polish and presentation as those in the Total War series. The most recent game, Medieval II recreates the battles of the Middle Ages with all the cinematic pageantry and intense savagery you could ever want. Now the Kingdoms expansion pack makes a good thing even better. It adds four new campaigns that render the clashes of religious warriors in the deserts of the Holy Land, knights and pagans in the forests of Northern Germany and, even more interesting, the first conflicts between Europeans and natives in the New World.
Loads of new factions, units, heroes and relics enlarge the already substantial offerings of the original game. No other game can recreate the sights and sounds of battle nearly as well as this one so fans of historical strategy definitely won't want to pass this one up. Role-playing Games. The fourth expansion since the release of Guild Wars Prophecies back in April , Eye of the North will focus on adding in higher level content for players to explore. This contrasts with the other expansions, Nightfall and Factions, which gave players an entire new starting area, story arc, and space to level up characters from scratch.
There is a main plot in Eye of the North that branches along the way, but it seems ArenaNet's larger focus was on creating entertaining side quests and optional content for players to enjoy. Eye of the North appears to be more about exploration, more about powering up your already formidable level 20 characters with better items, and gaining reputation with new factions, and will be available late this summer.
What to Expect: This Korean born massively multiplayer online role-playing game has a unique flavor for more than one reason. The most obvious is likely the art style. Choosing to forgo normal gaming conventions, developer IMC turned to Baroque sensibilities in their architectural and fashion designs. It's a flowery look that belies a fairly intense action heavy RPG where enemies re-spawn at an extremely fast rate.
Sword of the New World also institutes an interesting family element where players can build up several characters and bring three of them into battle at the same time. These interesting mechanics build on a complex combat system and character building mechanic that might be just what some RPG fans are looking for.
