I can help you stop Live Messenger from running at startup but not sure why it won't let you unpin it from the taskbar. It should let you right-click and choose "unpin this program from the taskbar". On the sign-in screen when messenger first starts, click on the help button on the right with the? In the window that appears, click on "sign in" on the list to the left, and un-tick the top box on the right "Automatically run Windows Live Messenger when I log onto Windows".
It may be worth uninstalling and downloading it again to see if there is an updated version that may work better. Nov 25, Mark Fuller.
